Creator Notes

I was very lost on what to do with the "Knight" theme at first. In the end I decided to write about a Knight (Chess Knight). He was supposed to be a heroic and outgoing horse-shaped chess piece, but he ended up becoming a man in a horse outfit going on random crusades to kill chess pieces and floating heads. I chose a super simple art style, mostly 2-D but easy to tell apart. I chose this because of the two-day restraint we had. My story shares no themes, and It was sort of inspired from a manga back in the day called "Dangerous Jiisan (Grandpa)". It involves a grandpa who randomly kills people... A LOT.

In developing my comic, I started out with various ideas that I needed to organize into one story that flows nicely. This was a challenge for me to think it completely out, so I took a different approach by just starting the comic and watch itself develop into an actual story. I'm particularly proud of how I was able to use all of my "Modern Warfare 2" references that I started out with. In my next comic, I might try to make more detailed characters and to use more expressive facial expressions.

Comic Review

Upon first glance, one will recognize a style of drawing similar to anime or manga. Chewy uses this style of drawing to create a very sporadic, action-fulled comic with many unforeseen twists and deaths. The unpredictability of the comic makes the reader want to know what happens next, and is always amused by the unexpected outcome. As one reads through the comic, the unique setting unfolds. The entire comic takes place on a chess board; however, unconventional chess moves occur when a knight piece goes rogue. I found the idea of having the setting be a chess board to be very clever and enjoyable. The panel layout made this comic work particularly well. With each page dictating a new sinario, the story progresses very easily. Also, this use of medium creates a great sensation of time. On each page, there are a few smaller panels, followed by a large page-filling panel. This large panel is used to show some extreme, exciting action. Chewy has great drawing skills and is a lover of anime and manga. I look forward to seeing him create comics that match his passion.
