Toby the Knight is a tragic comic about the successes and failures of a once famous knight named Toby. Once the best, most successful knight of all the Middle Ages, Toby is unfortunately sent to the future by and evil Wizard named Nergle. It is up to Toby to survive in a new world, defeat Nergle, and save himself. To get the basic message across, I chose a basic art style with simple characters and settings. This allowed me to create a complex plot that would not be limited by having to draw complex characters. The theme of a tragedy, the falling of a once great figure, has always fascinated me. Life is full of unpredicatable events, and whether it is for better or worse, one must live on and deal with such events.
After being given the vague topic of "knight," I began by simply drawing a knight. I wanted to get away from the steriotypical "knight in shining armour," and instead have a fat, lazy, ugly knight at my main character. With such an unusual knight as my main character, my plot was formed to tell the story of how a once great knight became so fat and ugly. I am particularly proud of my first few pages. As a very detailed oriented person, I put a lot of time and effort into each panel. Due to the closely approaching deadline, I was forced to adopt a more cartoon-like, simple drawing technique later in the comic. Either way, I am satisfied with the final product; however, I particuarly like my first few pages. In my next comic, I want to focus on drawing more realisic characters. I will have to work on my drawing skills in order to create a more realistic comic. I am excited for the challenge.
