Creator Notes

This comic is about Nohea and Lani, and their close escape from the life-threatening jaws of two killer sharks. We wanted the comic to be realistic, but also "cartoony," and by giving them distinct characteristics, they can easily be recognized. The idea sort of just popped into our heads, and we went from there.

Nick B mainly focused on the people and backgrounds, while Nick S focused on the sea creatures, especially the phenomenal sharks. We are very proud of the sharks, and the realistic nature of our characters. Next time, we would like to improve the shading, and have more detail.

Comic Review

My first impressions of this comic was that a lot of time was put into making the words and the pictures work together to create a cohesive piece. I think the artists did a very good job of presenting their characters in a realistic way, and it was evident that they worked very hard to make sure it was a clear style in between realism and cartooning. I really liked that they started out with the final part of the story with the girl being in the hospital, and THEN they went back to explain how she got their. It really set them apart from other stories and I like that. The sharks were very well done. It was impressive that Nick Shultz was able to recreate the different sea animals from different angles and perspectives. Nick Batchelder did a great job of working with the two human characters, and I was really able to see the mood expressed through them. It was really successful as a comic because there was a lot of variance with the size and shape of the panels, especially with the splash page. I thought that was really successful and it was awesome to see the versatility of the artists with the bottom view of the sharks and the girl. Like I said before the structure of telling how the characters got to their final position was also really interesting and nice. I look forward to seeing the boys take more chances in their definition of the character lines. I like that they made attempts at shading like they said in their comic description, and I think that if they take some risks with their shading and lines they would be really successful, and both of them clearly have potential to be great artists.
