Creator Notes

The story of my comic revolves around Zach, a young farm boy who feels insignificant to his father, who was a solider. When he learns from the teacher Billy Mays that the world is under the threat of destruction by strange beings, Zach's journey to save the world, and to understand his legacy and the meaning of life begins.I am mostly a self-taught artist. The art that was included in the piece was a product of the style I have developed over many a year. I also incorporated manga styles of drawing in a couple of the stills, since I think that manga somehow ties very well with most fantasy stories like this one. I just wanted to have a little fun with trying new things that I had never really done before. I was inspired to tell the story by my age as a teenager. Like Zach, I can be impatient, cynical, pessimistic, and confused. I believe I can relate to Zach and how naive one can be. I also LOVE to immerse myself in fantasy stories, whether it be books, movies, or video games. Thus, I decided to create my own fantasy story.

The first thing I thought about when creating the story was my character: a naive, foolish, and slightly childish hero who would journey forth to save the world and become mature. After a few sketches, I finally came up with Zach. Adding other elements to the story, such as characters, and important moments came rather spontaneously as the comic fell into place. I must say that I am most proud of the zombie fight scene on page 4. The scene took a while to write, since I wanted to convey Zach's naive and impatient attitude. Then, I had to convey some good action in the fight sequence, which was a long, and slightly grueling process. However, I felt proud of creating the scene. Another thing I am proud of is how I utilized Zach's narration. I believe that his narration in the beginning and end demonstrates his change in character, which is a vital part to a traditional hero's quest. I was pretty happy with how my script came out in the end. If there is one thing I would want to improve, I would probably want to make the beginning a little clearer. However, when I have to keep the comic concise for the sake of time, I think the plot will somehow have a couple holes. A funny thing I learned from this project was how much potential I had in a small amount of time. I didn't even THINK I could finish 8 pages in a few hours. But, I somehow managed to do it, I don't know how. I suppose that I should not neglect the potential I may have in the future after doing this project....

Comic Review

When I first read this comic, I was completely captured by the story through its awesome narration. The panels were very well planned out and the content helped create a fluid plot. The characters were quite interesting in this story as well, especially that of Billy Mays, and I particularly enjoyed the many elements that they had to offer to the story through their personalities. The comic's story was also enhanced by the excellent panel transitions, as I said before. Close-ups of the figures and wide views of the scenery are well placed, and there was good use of intensity. I would hope to see more of a description of the reasoning behind what is going on in the comic in the future, most likely through more images rather than text.
