Conquest
So let's say you're an ambitious person living in ancient China. You take a look around, and you realize that the government is failing and the people are ready to revolt. You deem it a good time to overthrow the current government. You know that if you do it right, you'll be the next one sitting on the Dragon Seat. So what's the best method of conquest? Well, let's look at some options.
If you're already a general or a king of a vassal state, a good idea will be to simply collect as many armies as possible, then lead a formal rebellion. That technique founded Zhou, Qin, Tang, and Song, so it's bound to work another time, right? The only problem is rallying the people and the troops to your loyalty. Kind of tough when most of the armies are controlled by the central government.
However, there's also the possibility of invasion from the North. Northern nomadic tribes have a tendency of threatening the security of China, and if you look at the case of the Yuan and Qing dynasties,it seemed to work pretty well. Besides, those cases were more recent. The bad part is morale. No one likes a foreign minority ruler. Are you willing to live a life in suspicion and fear?
There is another option, which has a higher chance of failure, but will gain you popularity with the people: A farmer's rebellion. It will take a lot of organization and good generals, but hey, if it worked with the Han Dynasty and it worked with Mao TseTung, it's definitely not impossible...
Of course, you may be into sabotage, and would rather execute a coup from inside the palace. Preferably with some help from the emperor's favorite concubine? There are also many cases where the emperor died young, and the empress must govern by the hand of the new child emperor.
So really, there are many well-tested choices for you to choose from! Pick one that fits your situation!
