Other Mythological Characters

Random people I'm tacking on here. I don't know why you want to torture yourself getting even more confused than before.

Jade Emperor and his Court

The Jade Emperor rules over the heavenly court, and also handles mortal affairs. Anything that happens in the mortal world eventually report up to him. His court is basically a simulation of the traditional Chinese court. There's a daily "cao", or meeting, where the officials file in, with the "wen guan", or administrative officials, to the left, and the "Wu Guan", or the military officials, to the right. He sits on a dais, with servants on the side with fans, etc. The said servants also handle any passing of objects between the emperor and one of his officials.
Some characters of the Jade Emperor's court:
  • Wang Mu Niang Niang, or "Xi Wang Mu". If you remember Journey to the West, she's the one who hosts the Pan Tao Hui (the Peach Festival). She's kinda the royalty of the heavens, and usually lives in the west, in a magical place somewhere near Tian Shan, methinks. Not sure, though.
  • Tai Shang Lao Jun. He's kinda the ultimate Daoist dude. Supposedly, he's the reincarnation or something of Lao Zi, the creator of Daoism. He's the one with lots of magical pills and magical instruments that are lot of fun to steal and use.
  • Yan Luo Wang: I'm not sure if the King of the Underworld should belong with the heavenly court or not, b/c he after all reports to Jade Emperor, but he does live in Hell. He's the one with the "Shen Si Bu", or "Life Death Records". He's also the judge of ppl's lives, which is why some depict him as a reincarnation of Bao Gong. There is also one vein that insists there are eight, each to weigh a different kind of ghost's life. Sort of like the seven deadly sins.
  • Tai Bai Jing Xin (Venus) He's the old man in Journey to the West that makes wise suggestions to the Emperor. Consider him the Emperor's left hand advisor.
  • Li Tian Wang: Generalissimo. He's the father of Ne Zha (a little kid who rides on the burning wheels), Jin Zha (Who studies with Yang Jian, I think, from FengSheng Bang), and Mu Zha (Who is serving Guan Ying)
  • 28 Xin Xiu (the 28 constellations) This should sound familiar. Yep, it's all the Fushigi Yuugi Seishi.
  • 4 Tian Wang ("sky kings") They guard the 4 gates to heaven. Very cool weapons: The Lute that makes people dizzy, the Umbrella that can hold lots of people, the Flying Sword, and the Flying Mink that eats people. (o.O)
  • Qian Li Yan (Thousand-Mile-Eyes) and Shun Feng Ar (Wind-Hearing Ears). They count for the Emperor's eyes and ears. Whenever something happens, they are the ones who basically poke their heads out of the clouds to see/hear what's going on.
  • Lei Gong, Dian Mu: Thunder and lighting, basically. LeiGong pounds on a drum, while Dian Mu I think uses flints to strike lightning. There's also the lady in charge of wind (she keeps it in a bag...like Greek mythology). Rain is provided by the Dragon Kings, usually the East Sea Dragon King. However, none of them are in charge of the amount of rain. Technically, it's supposed to be the Jade Emperor who writes daily decrees. However, there are instances where powerful magis like the Monkey King can "persuade" them.
  • Mao Bai Jun. (DawnWhite) He is actually a rooster with a white crown, I think. Anyway, his job is to call forth the sun every morning by crowing. Then all the other roosters in the world hear him, and crow, too. Sort of the Sun Commander, and also Rooster Spiritual leader

Travellers on Earth

There are four major types: the Daoists, the Buddhistvas, the spirits, and the insignificant natural demi-gods.
    Buddhistvas
  • Guan Yin Pu Sha: Everyone knows her. She's the merciful Buddhistva who decided to be a woman to help bare their pain. She has a thousand hands and a thousand eyes because while a mortal she had given up her hands and eyes to help mankind. She lives among the bamboo forests of NanHai, and the water in her vase gives life. (San Wei Zheng Shui: 3-flavored True Water)
  • Most Buddhistvas live with Buddha on Lei Shan. There are a few that live in the mountains. There's the one (Mi Er PuSha, methinks), who gives the Monkey King a "dan"/round pill to help him withstand wind.
    Daoists
  • Yang Jian: He's XiWangMu's nephew, and has three eyes. With the help of his hound he had caught the Monkey King. He can shift into 72 different shapes, plus there's the eye, which can reveal magic. In Feng Sheng Yan Yi he also drops by to help defeat the Si Tian Wang. (Which is confusing because these are bad while the ones in Journey to the West help the Jade Emperor)
  • The Daoists enchanters are the ones who live in the mountains and ... enhance their skills, I guess. They also accept students, and speciallize more in learning magic, while Buddhistvas accept disciples and focus more on Buddhism.
    demi-gods
  • Fu, Lu, Shou: They are Luck, Wealth, and Longetivity. And they live on the floating island held up the by the Ao!
  • Shan Sheng and Tu Di. (Mountain god and Earth) Every peak has a mountain spirit and every 10 square miles or something has an earth spirit. Usually summoned by and manipulated by stronger magi
    spirits
  • These are the animals and plants and random magic rocks that live for a long time and gather enough magic to be "Yao", monsters, or "Jin", spirits. They can take human form, etc. Some well known ones are like the Ginseng, the white snake, the grateful fox, and the 100+ in Journey to the West (spiders, rabbits, ox, bear...). Some basics that pretty much every deviant knows: flying on clouds, taking the shape of other people, creating illusions, fighting, and tele/magi-kinesis. They usually command a bunch of useless minions. Besides those mentioned, they usually specialize in something, or have at least 1 magical object.
